Mihkel Kama Discusses Exoplanets on “Terevisioon”

(External link) / 22.04.2024

Mihkel Kama recently gave an interview on the Estonian broadcast Terevisioon, discussing the search for exoplanets and the role of Estonian scientists in this field. He highlighted that while NASA has confirmed over 5,600 exoplanets so far, there are likely thousands more undiscovered in the universe, some of which could potentially support life.

Kama explained that Estonian researchers are currently focused on studying the host stars of exoplanets, a crucial step for understanding the planets themselves. He described how new exoplanets are detected primarily through the transit method, with space telescopes playing a key role due to their uninterrupted observations.

Looking ahead, Kama noted Estonia’s involvement in the European Space Agency’s Ariel mission, set to launch in 2029, which will study the atmospheres of 1,000 exoplanets. He emphasized that studying exoplanets not only advances scientific knowledge but also inspires students and the wider public to engage with science and technology.
