Giovanna Tinetti Talks Exoplanets and the Search for Life on Novaator

Giovanna Tinetti, a leading expert in the study of exoplanet atmospheres and a professor at University College London, recently visited Tartu as part of scientific discussions with Estonian astronomers and astrobiologists. During her visit, she gave an interview on the Estonian news broadcaster Novaator, sharing insights into the search for life beyond Earth and the study of planets outside our Solar System.

Tinetti explained that while thousands of exoplanets have been discovered, detailed atmospheric measurements exist for only a few dozen. She emphasized that studying planets that appear inhospitable is just as important as studying potentially “Earth-like” planets, as life could emerge under exotic chemical conditions very different from those on Earth.

A key focus of her talk was the upcoming European Space Agency (ESA) ARIEL mission, scheduled for launch in 2029, which will study the atmospheres of around 1,000 exoplanets. According to Tinetti, repeated and systematic observations of a large number of planets will help scientists understand the diversity of planetary atmospheres and better define the potential limits for life.

She also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, noting that studying exoplanets requires expertise in astronomy, chemistry, and planetary science. Beyond its scientific value, Tinetti stressed, the search for exoplanets and extraterrestrial life inspires students, motivates the public, and drives advances in technology and observational methods.
